Ebook About “It is refreshing & inspiring seeing my beloved Africa through fresh eyes.” …Lynette Rink, Tukongote Community Projects, Zambia“I loved your book, your great empathy with the people and places and your real understanding of their situation.”…Tessa Prior, Waterberry Zambezi Lodge, ZambiaMy husband’s glare pins the ranger’s warning to my forehead, “Any movement will cause an animal to react—it will either flee or attack.”So begins the written and photographic journey through four African countries tracking wild animals through tall grasses and thorny bushes, sleeping with hippos grunting outside thin bedroom walls, facing down an elephant, and watching as my husband almost loses his life for a hot breakfast. In Soweto and Johannesburg, with its gold and saffron colored air, I trace apartheid from its inception to its demise. I savor the kindness of people in rural villages, see the desperation and hope of squatters living in “informal settlements” outside cities, and find myself in awe of their courage and ingenuity.Gliding down the Okavango Delta I encounter birds light enough to walk on lily pads, others tall enough to look me in the eye. It takes birding to a higher level. In Botswana I see huge herds of elephants brought back from near decimation. In the Namib Desert, I witness survival and death. In An Elephant at My Door, I share this special world with readers through stories wrapped up in a safari adventure.Book An Elephant at My Door: On Safari in Africa Review :
I love Africa - I have never been there, but I love it. I love the music, the wildlife, the people, the culture, the art, landscape. As I traveled with Louise, via An Elephant at My Door, she gave me all of these things I love. Zulu dancers sing and dance. African women clap and sing to greet the new arrivals at a camp. Louise and Joel track lions, leopards, hyenas, wildebeests, and even penguins. Elephants roam among the visitors that have come to see them. We travel along with guides like Stanley, Sam, and Mr. K, all so knowledgeable and all so respectful of the wildlife that surrounds them. We experience rivers, waterfalls, grasslands, and deserts. And the the thing that I think will stay with me the most: the people. They are kind and caring - and just like you and me: children hold hands, run and jump in play; women watch over babies and little ones, and sit together to share each other's company. Music stirs their soul. When I finished this book, I had a "sundowner" of my own with a Campari cocktail, and thanked Louise for taking me on this wonderful Aftrican adventure!! Louise and Joel's three and a half week trip through Southern Africa is full of gems on the complex interaction between the animals habitat, and the efforts by both governments and private entities to maintain and preserve the wildlife legacy that is Africa. Apparently, the author's skill in compressing her observations and the comments of various guides approaches the compactness of poetry. The unexpected revelation was the apparent culinary feasts that waited them at various camp sites upon their return, a daily event that the Deterchins anticipated each evening. My opinion is that this book is the next best thing to being there, or is an excellent prep reader for this hoping to go there someday.
